You know how sports organizations or major events have an “official” item for just about every category? I feel like plaid flannel shirts are the official top of fall.
Yet for me, on their own, plaid flannel shirts don’t really feel like my style. I feel like I buy one every couple of years just to decide that I don’t like the colors or the fit.
I think I’ve found a winner in this black and gray version from Old Navy though. It’s not too oversized, and the neutral colors feel more “me” than some of the more traditional plaids I’ve seen around. Here are a few ways I like to style this plaid flannel shirt.

I love a button-up shirt as a layering piece, and I think the combination of the plaid and a graphic tee is so fun. With jeans and cute sneakers, this is the perfect comfy weekend combo.

I like that a plaid flannel shirt doesn’t have to be a layer–it’s cute on it’s own with jeans and ankle boots. I like to knot the front, but it would look cute partially tucked-in too.

On really cold days, I like to combine the flannel shirt with a cozy cardigan for warmth. This is what I wore to carve pumpkins over the weekend–it felt oh-so-fall.

Here are a few affordable plaid shirt options; some are flannel, some are just plaid. I like the extra warmth of flannel, but I know that some may want a lighter layer.
