June Reading List

Hello, summertime! Are you a summer lover? I don’t love summer weather (I prefer not to freeze or sweat, thank you), but I love the feeling of summer. I love that I can adjust my working hours now that I don’t have to take kids to school, since we are lucky enough to have them enrolled in the “school of dad” during the summer since Aaron is a teacher. I love thinking about upcoming travel. Schedules feel more relaxed, and while I do love a schedule, it’s nice to embrace a more low key way of life this time of year.

Summer reading is also one of my favorite things about this time of year. I probably read more new releases than usual, and it’s so satisfying to dive into a fresh new read during a hot summer day (especially if I’m in the shade and/or air conditioning).

Here is my reading list for June.

This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub. I just picked this one up from the library and I can’t wait to crack it open! Alice goes to bed on the night before she turns 40 feeling okay about her life, although her father is ill, and she feels like there’s something she’s missing. The next morning she wakes up in 1996, on the day of her sixteenth birthday. She’s shocked of course, but what amazes her the most is seeing her young, healthy dad. I love this unique spin on a time-travel story—I can’t think of too many novels that focus on a father-daughter relationship. I’ve been seeing this one everywhere and I can’t wait to read it.

The Lazy Genius Kitchen by Kendra Adachi. I originally chose something different for my nonfiction pick for June, but I decided to go with this one instead. I’m a dedicated Kendra Adachi fangirl, and have been since I started listening to her podcast, The Lazy Genius, several years ago. I adored her first book, The Lazy Genius Way, and I look forward to taking her helpful, practical advice to help me in the kitchen. I have a library copy waiting for me, but I have a feeling I might be purchasing a copy of this one.

Here for It by R. Eric Thomas. This essay collection has been on my TBR for quite some time now, so when I saw a Kindle deal for it last month I quickly clicked the “Buy” button. I’ve heard that his essays are both hilarious and poignant, and everyone I know who has read it highly recommends this one. I think it will be the perfect read for busy summer days when I need something that’s easy to pick up and put down.

Finding Me by Viola Davis. I’m reading this for the book club I’m in, and I’m definitely going to listen on audio, as she narrates it herself. As I mentioned in my recent post on how I choose what to read next, I love being a part of a book club because it pushes me to pick up books I wouldn’t normally. I like Viola Davis, but I don’t typically read many celebrity memoirs. Yet I’ve heard nothing but good things about her story.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. This is another new release that I continue to hear great things about. It’s about Elizabeth Zott, “a one-of-a-kind scientist in 1960s California whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved TV cooking show,” according to the StoryGraph description. I have a feeling I’m going to love this one.
