Easy Homemade Valentine’s Day Ideas

Generally speaking, I like to keep it pretty low key for Valentine’s Day. I do love the excuse to eat more chocolate, plus all the reds, pinks, and purples, but otherwise we don’t get too fancy around here. However, I do like to do little things to make Valentine’s Day special. Here are a few easy, inexpensive things you can do to treat loved ones this Valentine’s Day.

{make birdseed hearts}

I saw this idea on Jen Loves Kev, and I thought it was such an adorable idea. Jona goes to a small in-home daycare, so I thought this would be the perfect “treat” to bring his friends. I wanted to stay away from the candy, since a few of the kids there are still just babies.

These were really easy to make, and so much fun to include my little kitchen helper as well. I will say though that I bought some “exotic bird” birdseed at Target (it was on sale so it was cheapest) and it didn’t stick together as well as smaller “regular” birdseed probably would have. So of the 9 or so I made, only 5 survived. (Luckily, that was just the number I needed.)

Bird Seed Hearts, an easy to make, fun, non-candy treat to give to friends.

{make heart-shaped pizza}

Sure, a lot of pizza places will make these for you this Valentine’s Day, but it’s ridiculously easy to make yourself. Just shape your dough into a heart and top with your favorite toppings. For fun, I even cut the pepperonis into little hearts.

{make your sweetheart a milkshake}

Aaron loves all things cake-flavored, and one of his favorite things is the “Cake and Shake” milkshake from Cold Stone. I decided to make a homemade version for him (I used this recipe from The Novice Chef) and it was a hit! Usually when I make dessert it includes chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate, but Aaron appreciated this dessert made just for him. Fortunately, he shared it with me as well.

Even if you’re staying in for Valentine’s Day, it’s still nice to make something special for your significant other, or really any loved one in your life.

What are your Valentine’s Day plans? Are you making anything special this year?
