weekly highlights {14}

Can you believe we’ve been doing this self-quarantining and social distancing thing for over three weeks now? Maybe you can, maybe it’s felt like an eternity. Some days it feels that way for sure, while other days I don’t mind all of us being forced to stay home. Here are a few highlights from last week.

Counting up silverware for a math activity

{eating}

  • Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Peanut Butter Bars – With all that, how could those be bad? Hint: they’re not. I left out the peanut butter chips and did a mix of milk chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate chips instead.
  • Stir Fry Beef Noodles – This dinner came together quickly and easily, but had so much flavor. I thought they were even better the next day when the noodles had more time to absorb the sauce.

{reading}

  • In an Instant – This was a Kindle First Reads freebie I picked up, and my expectations are usually fairly low for those. Occasionally they surprise me though, and I ended up really enjoying this one.
  • The Selection (book one) – I was craving something light and fun, and this definitely delivered! I listened on audio, and it was really well done. My only issue was that it felt incomplete; I don’t usually like books that force you into a sequel to find out what will happen.

{watching}

  • The Pharmacist – I loved this Netflix documentary series about a pharmacist who began investigating his son’s death and ended up assisting in a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma (creators of OxyContin).
  • Remember the Titans – I hadn’t seen that movie in a long time but we watched it last week. It’s such a great film, and the soundtrack is amazing.

{loving}

  • Jona’s first grade teacher – I love how she’s making the most of this weird time. Our school district created the same online curriculum for each grade and she doesn’t have to do much beyond help the kids as needed. But instead, she hosts daily Zoom meetings with the class, creates optional weekly schedules that incorporate lessons from the curriculum as well as other “challenges” like tying their shoes and counting up all our silverware. They go on virtual field trips and watch drawing videos and create art together. She’s an awesome teacher and I’m so thankful for her.
  • Violet quote – She asked me to trim her nail where it was partially torn off, then said “If I pull it all the way off, it will bleed.” I said, “Maybe so.” Then she says cheerfully, throwing her hands in the air in a palms-up shrug, “and then I won’t have a finger anymore!”

What have been some of your highlights lately?
