Currently: August

I’m thrilled to be joining one of my favorite bloggers and long-time blog buddies Anne to co-host this month’s Currently Linkup. August is always a time of transition, at least at our house, with Aaron going back to work, Jona celebrating a birthday, and summer winding to a close. Here are a few things that I’m currently up to so far this month. I hope you’ll join the linkup and share a little bit of your August as well.

{currently: August 2017}

{snacking on} peanut butter-filled pretzels. Having kids has made me a lot more strategic about my snacking. I’ve already mentioned Jona’s snack-obsessed ways, and by now I’ve learned that if I’m going to eat a snack around him I’d better be willing to share (or at least willing to let him get one of his own). I love these little peanut-butter filled pretzels, but I’m also happy to share them with the Snack King. I’ll save my more sinful indulgences for nap time.

{anticipating} age four. Jona turns four in less than two weeks, which of course makes me happy and breaks my heart all at once. Three was a bit rough for the kid, with a new sister, a new school, and then a new classroom (not to mention a farewell to diapers). He’s not the best with change as it is, and boy that was a LOT of change in a short time. I have a feeling that four is going to be a great age, and yet I can’t help but look back fondly on the times when he was teeny tiny. The years sure have gone by fast!

{borrowing} all the library books. I put a long list of books on hold at the beginning of summer, and because of their various hold queue lengths they’ve been trickling in these past couple of months. Of course if I go to pick up a book for me, Jona asks me if I got any for him. That’s one request I’ll happily oblige. (Free books = the easiest treat ever.) I’m way behind on my reading recaps, but a few recent favorites for me have been This Is How It Always Is, The Hate U Give, and The Almost Sisters. Jona’s favorites of late include the illustrated Who’s on First, Best Frints in the Whole Universe, and Jabari Jumps

{admiring} the laid-back parenting style of my BFF. I’m fascinated by the study of personalities, and it is in learning more about my own through assessments like the Meyers-Briggs (INFJ) and Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies (Upholder) that I’ve learned to be more accepting of my own strengths and weaknesses. I may be okay with my schedule-oriented, rule-following ways, but sometimes I can’t help but admire the more relaxed, go with the flow people in my life. My best friend Abby is that way, and I love how she’ll think nothing of taking Jona with her kids for a spur of the moment trip to the McDonald’s Playplace, or remain completely unruffled in a room full of crazy, sugar-filled kids. We’ve been best friends since the 7th grade, and I love being able to share our lives as moms together too.

{purchasing} Avengers-themed party supplies and birthday gifts. Gone are the days that I get to choose the party theme, sigh. Lately he’s been all about Captain America, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Ninja Turtles, and every toy becomes either a weapon or a baseball bat. Luckily, Amazon has a lot to choose from and I’m not going to pressure myself to get super creative with the party planning. Some people are gifted party-throwers. I am not. As long as there are snacks and cake, and the kids are having fun, I’m satisfied.

So, what have you been up to lately?
