March Clothing Budget

After just 3 purchases in February, this month’s budget is quite a contrast, with 8 items added to my wardrobe. However, they were all great deals, and the most expensive item I got was $40, which isn’t bad. Here’s what I bought.

Spring Stripes: 2 Outfit Ideas

Right now Kansas is confusing its weather metaphors. March is supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb, but instead the month started pretty lamb-like, and lately we’ve definitely felt more lion around here (hello, snow on Easter Sunday!). We do have some warm weather on the horizon though, so I’m hopeful that the weather will start behaving like the metaphorically-correct animal soon.

Enough about lions and lambs, let’s talk stripes.  I came across this red-orange striped shirt while perusing ThredUp recently, and while I don’t typically buy Target (or other already inexpensive) items second-hand, I couldn’t pass it up. It was a good decision; it’s already proven to be a versatile piece that’s perfect for the fickle weather this time of year.

In addition to this top, I added another striped piece to my wardrobe this month, also from Target: these cute mini-wedgesI know I’m not the only stripe addict out there—tell me, what was your most recent stripe purchase?

$10 at Target: Beauty and Office Supplies

I am, literally (love you and your 5% savings, Red Card), a card-carrying member of the “I love Target” club. The Cartwheel app frequently pats me on the back with my big-saver status, so I try to focus on those savings rather than on percentage of my paycheck that goes there each month (not sure I want to know).

Therefore, when some blog buddies started a $10 to Target linkup I had to join in the fun. It’s a simple concept: give yourself ten bucks to spend at Target and share what you find. Since I loved seeing others’ purchases, I knew I’d have just as much fun sharing mine.

Mom and Toddler Style: Spring Colors for Easter

Easter always catches me off-guard. Its ever-changing date frustrates a planner like me who loves schedules and predictability. (Who understands how they determine the date of Easter? Is it the moon? Is there some pattern I don’t know about? Was it decided by the same person who thought it would be a good idea to change our clocks two times a year? What’s wrong with picking one date and sticking with it? That seems to work for, oh, that little holiday called Christmas! Okay, rant over.)

Today I'm joining a few other bloggers to share our mommy and me Easter style. Thanks so much to Ada for putting this together!

BROOKE of Pumps and Pushups: "Our church is very casual, so we don’t typically get too dressed up for Easter. But we coordinated our stripes and tried to get a picture where all of us were looking! We were almost successful, oh boys! :) "
ADA of Elegance and Mommyhood: "When I think of getting dressed for Easter, two things come to mind, light pretty pastels and coordinating outfits for the family. Vivian and I did just that with our patterned dresses in mint and pink. My little ballerina loved getting all dolled up in a brand-new outfit, while I shopped my closet for mine. Thankfully, though still a little chilly, it was warm enough to take these photos. We are ready for church on Sunday morning."
ERICA of Pumps and Pushups: "I always associate pretty, pastel colors and white with the Easter holiday. When I found this onesie for baby girl I loved it immediately for pastel blue with hints of teal, pink and yellow throughout. I chose to wear this dress and teal sweater to accent the colors in her outfit and of course had to top both of our looks off with white shoes."

AMY of the Gifted Gabber: "I was so excited when my Mom (who is a talented seamstress) offered to alter two of my saved childhood Easter dresses for my two girls this Easter. The girls look absolutely adorable in my pale pink and mint vintage dresses. I set out on a mission to find a pastel, ruffled dress for myself to coordinate with theirs. I found this peach dress at one of my favorite local boutiques."
SHEA of Shea Lennon: "This Easter, my son Jona and I are wearing my favorite spring color, coral. I admit I had a little too much fun shopping for our coordinating outfits. A couple of years ago, we started the tradition of going to the 7.00am sunrise service at our church. Afterwards, we'll have to see if the Easter Bunny visited our house. (Hopefully, he comes bearing coffee.) Happy Easter!"

LAURA of Why I Do DeClaire: "Claire is growing into quite the fashionista. Although she claims to love 'all the colors' pink seems to be her favorite. When I saw this pink on pink polka dot dress at the store, I knew she would love it. She had quite the time twirling in front of our mirror when we put her in it and was excited to take pictures with mommy! I pulled out an old floral dress I've had and added a denim jacket for an extra layer. It's still chilly here, but incorporating bright colors and floral prints helps to bring the Easter feel no matter the weather!"
RACHEL of Threads for Thomas: "When I think of dressing for Easter, I think of girlie dresses and pastel colors. Perhaps because I remember loving the holiday as a kid, and I would always want to wear my prettiest dress for when I attended church with my great, great aunt (everyday I got to spend time with her was so special). Today, I still love to dress very feminine on the holiday, and this pink bow dress fits the occasion perfectly. Since we tend to keep holidays casual in our family, I dressed the boys in pastel colored dress shirts, but finished their look with jeans and sneakers. I want them to be comfortable as I know they'll be running around all day, and can not wait to send them on their first Easter egg hunt!"

My Budget Home: Living Room

I’ve mentioned before that one of my goals is to get our house (new to us as of October) decorated, room by room. I tend to get overwhelmed when it comes to all things home décor, but I think if I focus on one room at a time I have a better chance of not throwing my hands up in the air.

I’m going to start with our upstairs living room, because it’s a space that’s currently being under-utilized. As of now there’s nothing in it but a piano, a bookshelf, and an ugly side table. I’d like to turn it into an actual living space that can be used an alternative to our den / TV room downstairs.

While perusing my Pinterest boards, I found two inspiration photos that convey the color scheme and feel that I would like for the room.

5 Places to Take Kids in Kansas City (for Spring Break or Any Time)

I'm joining Kiki at In Its Time for The Circle linkup, where we're sharing spring break plans and goals. I don't have a spring break, but these are destinations I'd love to take Jona in the coming year or two.

As a working mom with the same schedule Monday through Friday, it can be easy to get stuck in the same routine, even on weekends. However, Kansas City has so much to offer, especially when it comes to great destinations for kids. There are several places I've been wanting to take Jona, and spring seems like the perfect time to go.

How to Add Personality to a Simple Look featuring Uncommon Goods

You all know by now that my wardrobe consists of a lot of classic pieces. One of my goals over the last few years has been to buy fewer, higher quality pieces that will last, so that ideally, I just need to give my closet a few fun updates each season. One of my favorite ways to make the classic pieces in my wardrobe feel like “me” is by adding jewelry.

The jewelry I’m wearing today comes from Uncommon Goods. They contacted me about featuring some of their jewelry here, and I’m so happy that they did. They are known for their jewelry (go here or here to see a few things they have to offer), home décor, and gifts, but more than that they’re known for being a company that gives back. They support independent artists and designers, and a lot of what they sell are handmade goods. As a company, they are committed to having a positive impact on the world, and they only sell products created in harmony with the environment and without harming people or animals. Now if that doesn’t sound like a company you want to get behind, I don’t know what does!

How do you add personality to your basics?

Spring Wardrobe Wishlist and Outfit Ideas

It's really starting to feel like spring here in Kansas City, and while I wouldn't put it past winter to try to get a last word, I won't complain if it stays this nice. I've been thinking of a few things I'd like to add to my wardrobe this season.

{my spring wishlist}

{one} a dressy tee. I want a top that feels like a tee-shirt, but looks a little fancier. I love this one from H&M (and I also love the price!).

{two} a floral skirt. I don't have a lot of floral print in my closet, but I'd like to have more. I love this bright skirt with the unique floral print from Boden.

{three} a white blouse. I used to have several white blouses in my closet, but I recently realized my collection has dwindled down to none. That needs to be remedied, don't you think? This embroidery-trimmed one from H&M looks perfect.

{four} a long statement necklace. I love adding a statement necklace to jazz up a look, and I'd like to add one in a longer length, like this one from Bauble Bar, to my collection.

{five} neutral wedge sandals. I have a pair of neutral wedges, but they're getting pretty old and beat up. I'd like to replace my old faithfuls with this cute pair from Lucky Brand

{outfit ideas}

Here are a few ways I would style these pieces, with a few other items I already have in my closet.

{look 1} white top + jeans + necklace + wedges

{look 3} white top + floral skirt + earrings + sandals

{look 4} blouse + white jeans + scarf + wedges

Photo an Hour: Sunday

I was inspired by a recent post on According to Kiki, in which Kiki posted a photo from every hour of her day. I've seen these types of posts before, and I always enjoy reading them to see a little glimpse into the everyday lives of some of my favorite bloggers. So I thought I would create a similar post myself.

Here is a photo an hour for this past Sunday.

{7:30am} I get up and make myself coffee. Usually, Jona is already up by now, but today he's still asleep.

{8:30am} I enjoy a little quiet time to myself before Aaron and Jona are up. Jona was sick this past week, and he's been sleeping a lot more than usual. While my boys rest, I work on a blog post.

Wear it Now and Later: Sweatshirt for Winter and Spring

Inspired by the prompt for this month's #momstyleremix linkup with Anne and Jenn, I'm pulling out a much-loved closet staple of mine, my polka dot sweatshirt. Inspired by the wishy washy weather that is March in Kansas, I'm styling it for both cold and warm days.

Currently: March

Even with the “bonus day” this month, February still sped right on by. Typically by now I’m grumbling about the cold and cursing my boots and sweaters, but this month’s weather was actually pretty fantastic. So good that I’m a little nervous about what March will bring.

As always, I’m joining Anne and Jenna to share what I’m currently

{wishing} for a shopping day. In my pre-mom days, I remember it being no big deal to spend a Saturday hitting the stores with friends. Now, shopping (not of the grocery variety) gets squeezed in between other errands if I’m lucky, and more often happens primarily online. I’m sure my friends feel the same way, so we may have to plan a girls day out this month.

{craving} white pizza with greens.  Typically when we have pizza night at home, I make something that everyone can agree on, like pepperoni. However, sometimes I’m in the mood for something different. Neither Aaron nor Jona would touch it, but this white pizza piled high with lemony arugula looks so fresh, delicious, and spring-like to me.

{going} on a paint-buying mission. I see a lot of trips to the Home Depot in my future, as we paint our living room and add crown molding. I’m looking forward to the finished product, but I dread all the taping and prep work. That’s the worst!

{wearing} stripes on repeat. Stripes are to my closet what ice cream is to my freezer—I can never have enough! My stripes devotion is evidenced by my daily outfits on Instagram; just about every other day I’ve got some sort of stripe action happening. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

{learning} all about habits and vulnerability. As a rather devoted lover of fiction, I recently shook up my reading routine a bit by reading two non-fiction books in the past month. The first was Better than Before by Gretchin Rubin (whose Happier podcast I’m pretty obsessed with), which is all about habits. The second was Daring Greatly by Brené Brown, which is about embracing vulnerability. I'm still reading Daring Greatly, but I'll share my thoughts on Better than Before in Friday's book post.

What are you up to currently?

Goals for March and a February Goal Review

Each month I share my goals as a way to motivate myself to get things done and stay accountable. Here's this month's recap and the next month's set of goals for my home, my blog, and my family or personal life.
