Outfit Idea: Burgundy and Blush Pink, Plus 29 Things You May Not Know About Me

Happy Leap Day! If only we got the day off work for this "holiday," right? I love reading random facts about people, so in honor of this special day I'm sharing 29 things you may not know about me. (Along with an outfit too, of course.) I'd love to hear some facts about you too, so share something in the comments!

{29 things you may not know about me}

1. I used to be a vegetarian (7th grade through freshman year of college).
2. I won a contest to be a kid DJ on a local oldies radio station when I was in middle school.
3. In high school, I used to write down every outfit I wore so I wouldn't wear the same thing twice.
4. I took ice skating lessons for a year as a child.
5. I joined a softball team with friends as an adult and hit the ball one time the whole season (and got tagged out at first).

Pinterest Inspired Breakfast Bowls

Meal planning is part of my regular weekend routine. I scan the grocery store ad to see what's on sale, then I look through my Pinterest boards, cookbooks, and recipe binder to find a few dinners (and sometimes a dessert) to get us through the week. I'm one of those weird people who really enjoys the task of meal planning.

However, one meal that I always manage to neglect is breakfast. I eat it every day, but because I'm rushed in the morning and rarely plan this meal ahead, I tend to eat the same thing over and over. After day 547 of peanut butter toast. even a peanut butter lover like me gets a little tired of it.

I recently scoured my breakfast Pinterest board for a few breakfast ideas that I could make ahead and eat all week long.

February Clothing Budget

I know February is a short month at all, but I can hardly believe this is the last full week of the month. Thanks to the great response from you all on my budget post for January, I’m going to continue this monthly budget series. Here are my February purchases.

How to Style a Chambray Dress for Winter: 2 Outfit Ideas

I believe wholeheartedly that most style rules are made to be broken, such as “no white after Labor Day.” However, in my own closet I tend to draw bold lines dividing clothes seasonally, and I rarely wear something for spring (like a floral cardigan) in the fall or winter.

These rigid closet “divisions” were originally born out of necessity: I simply didn’t have room in my closet to store out of season clothes, so they got relegated to the basement. Now that I have more closet space to work with at our new house, I find myself loosening up a little and thinking about how items I previously considered “off limits” for this season could work.

One such piece is my chambray dress, which to me has always felt very spring-like. However, inspired by this pin from Peaches in a Pod, I decided to try to winterize it. Since I haven't worn it in a while, it gave my winter wardrobe a much needed (and free!) refresh.

Winter Family Activity: Visit a Local Museum

Do you get cabin fever during the winter? I do leave the house every day to go to work, but being cooped up indoors on weekends with an active 2 year old can be exhausting. Last month I decided to take advantage of a winter-friendly indoor activity: a museum visit.

We took Jona to the Museum at Prairie Fire, a natural history museum. While he is still a bit young to get the most out of what the museum offers, it was still entertaining (and much better than sitting at home).

Spreading the Love: Blog Love

Today I’m joining Kiki at In Its Time for her monthly The Circle linkup. This month’s theme is all about spreading the love in the blogging community.

I wanted to spread the love today by sharing a few of my favorite reads with you, some old and some new. With hundreds of blogs in my Feedly, it would be impossible to share all the blogs I love with you, so I’m just choosing a handful of favorites.

Mom and Toddler Style: Cords and Cardigans

Today is my mom's birthday, so if you're reading this mom, happy birthday!

How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun for Valentine’s Day? We tried a new place for brunch after church, and we gave Jona a book (The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss) and some highly coveted fruit snacks. After Jona went to bed we treated ourselves to a home cooked surf and turf dinner--filet mignons and sea scallops. Yum!

Today I have a mom and toddler look featuring an outfit combination that I wear frequently this time of year: cords and cardigans. Jona has been known to rock some cords as well, but it wasn’t until recently that a cardigan became part of his wardrobe. I found this adorable Fair Isle grandpa-style cardigan at Old Navy during their after Christmas sale and I couldn’t resist. It’s a little big, but that almost makes it even cuter.

I love the cords + a cardigan formula, because it’s both versatile and comfortable. It’s easy to swap out the top depending on how dressy or casual you’d like to be. For a more casual look, swap out the blouse for a fun graphic tee. For a different, yet still polished, look try a button-up shirt with a necklace layered under the collar.

Is this a combination that you wear? How do you style your cords and cardigans?

Easy Homemade Valentine's Day Ideas

Generally speaking, I like to keep it pretty low key for Valentine's Day. I do love the excuse to eat more chocolate, plus all the reds, pinks, and purples, but otherwise we don't get too fancy around here. However, I do like to do little things to make Valentine's Day special. Here are a few easy, inexpensive things you can do to treat loved ones this Valentine's Day.

Stitch Fix Review: My February Fix

It's been a while since I last had a Stitch Fix delivery, so I decided this month it would be just the thing to cheer up my winter wardrobe a little. I am a lover of classic pieces and can easily fall into the habit of buying nothing but basics. I like Stitch Fix because they always send fun, unique pieces mixed in with more classic items.

Here's what was in my February fix:

{one} Zad - Martin Mini Layered Metal Cuff: $28

I don't own a lot of bracelets, because I usually find them to be uncomfortable. I have to really love a bracelet to wear it regularly, and unfortunately this one didn't make the cut. I liked the mixed metals and the simple design, but I just don't see myself wearing it often.

Verdict: Return.

My Go-To "Mom-iform": Jeans and a Sweater - 9 Un-boring Looks

Are you participating in the Create 28 style challenge hosted by A Lovely Little Wardrobe, A Little Bit of Cheer, and Whitney a la Mode? I created a mom and toddler look yesterday for their fun challenge. Check it out and be sure to join in with your own looks!

I love to have fun with style and experiment with different looks, but I also like having a few go-to looks that I know will work. One of my favorite easy go-to combinations is jeans and a sweater. Alone, there's nothing noteworthy about this combo, but what I love is that it's a blank canvas for whatever accessories you're in the mood for.

What's your go-to combination you're wearing on repeat?

Spied it, Tried it: Nutella Desserts

My first experience with Nutella was when I studied abroad in Paris one summer when I was in college. On our way home from class, my classmate and I passed a little crepe stand, where I indulged myself with a Nutella crepe just about every day. I gained a bit of weight that summer, I'm not going to lie. (In fact, our French "mom" at the house we stayed made a comment about how I may want to start cutting back on the chocolate. I wanted to be offended, but she was right, my limited selection of pants had become increasingly difficult to button.)

Anyway, now days I still love to indulge in Nutella, although now I'm much better at practicing moderation. Recently I've been craving that chocolaty, creamy hazelnut spread again, and wanting to make one of the many Nutella desserts on my For the Sweet Tooth board.

Currently: February

Guys, I just realized I had this titled "Currently: January". That's how shocked I am that we're already one month into 2016!!

We're one whole month in to 2016, can you believe that? So far I'm pretty happy with how this new year is going. I always start the year off motivated to accomplish my goals, and that motivation is still going strong.

I'm joining Anne and Jenna to share what I'm currently...

Currently - February 2016 | www.shealennon.com

{sending} photos and birthday love to my mom. My mom's birthday is the 15th of this month, and since she's not nearby right now I'm planning what to send her. Since she reads this blog I won't give too much away, but I know that Jona pictures will be at least part of her birthday package.

{eating} stir-fries and noodle bowls. I am a big fan of these types of dishes for multiple reasons. They are usually quick and easy to make, and they're also a great way to use up leftover vegetables or meat without feeling like you're eating leftovers. A few nights ago I made this Korean Beef Bulgogi using leftover shredded beef and it was delicious!

{dreaming} big blog dreams. I mentioned in my vision board post that this year I really want to grow this space. I'm committed to making that happen, and I'm constantly daydreaming of different steps I can take to help achieve that goal. Stay tuned this year for some fun things heading your way!

{smelling} dinner cooking all day. It's become an unofficial Sunday ritual to have dinner in the slow cooker. As much as I would love to have a relaxing Sunday, usually Sundays are busy with weekend projects to finish and preparations for the coming week. I love not having to worry too much about dinner and letting the Crock Pot do most of the work. This past Sunday I made Queso Chicken Chili with Roasted Corn and Jalapeno. It was delicious!

{hearting} the dollar section at Target. The people at Target sure know what they're doing. They put their "one spot" section, full of adorable office supplies, holiday accessories, and other too-good-to-pass-up bargains, right at the front of the store so you can't ignore it. I don't remember the last time I went to Target without picking up at least one thing from those enticing little bins.

What have you been up to this month so far?

How to Wear Red and Pink: 2 Outfit Ideas

Last year I started putting a little “from the archives” section at the end of all my blog posts to show what I posted on the same day for the past 5 years. It was a fun way to go back and look (and sometimes cringe) at older posts. One thing stood out for me as I perused my archives: my favorite year to look back on was 2012.

That year, I had a lot of fun experimenting with different color combinations and exploring new places to take photos. Since then, I’ve tried to step up my blogging game in many ways, but that exercise of looking back reminds me that I don’t want to lose myself at the expense of “improvement.” Sure, I want to create relatable, share-able content, but I also want to be the girl who isn’t afraid to mix bright colors or take a few style risks.

With that in mind, and with Valentine’s Day coming up this month, I thought I’d do a post on one of my favorite bold color combinations, red and pink.
