Embracing Summer on Kansas City Moms Blog

Earlier this week, I was on the Kansas City Moms Blog talking about how to make summer feel special even if you work year-round. Head here to check it out.

I hope you have a great weekend, I'll see you Monday!

July Clothing Budget

Compared to last month, July was a fairly quiet shopping month. I did splurge a little on a dress, but otherwise I didn’t do much shopping. Typically I also share what I bought for Jona, but you’ll notice that’s missing this month. That’s because I didn’t shop for him at all! That’s quite rare, as I typically have a hard time passing up adorable toddler boy clothes. Here’s what I did buy.

Summer White Dress and Confident Twosday Linkup

Thanks so much to Laura for having me co-host her Confident Twosday linkup. I love joining in this linkup every week, and I love her motivation behind it--to encourage women to share things that make them feel confident. It’s also very fitting since “confidence” happens to be my word of the year for 2016.

Sometimes it can be difficult to feel confident during pregnancy. In fact, that’s been more of a struggle for me this time around than it was with my first. When I was pregnant with my son Jona, I think it was all so new and magical that it didn’t occur to me to feel self-conscious of my growing, changing body. This time, especially as I’ve neared the end of my second trimester, I’ve worried more about the size of my bump, the weight gain, etc. I don’t dwell on these things, but they occasionally cloud my thoughts.

When I’m choosing an outfit to wear, one thing I can count on to help boost my confidence is a dress. I’ve been living in dresses this pregnancy, and to me there is nothing more comfortable or flattering. I have been wearing this white dress from Old Navy a ton this summer, and when I saw this post on Writes Like a Girl, I knew I wanted to recreate her little white dress look. I wore it to work a couple of weeks ago (you may have seen it on Instagram) and then again to church on Sunday, and felt confident for both occasions.

When you’re struggling to love your body, what do you wear to make you feel more confident?

Pregnancy Update: 26 Weeks and Bump Style Roundup

I’m 26 weeks along now, which means my second trimester will be coming to an end soon. I can’t believe how quickly this pregnancy has gone by, and I know that October will be here before I know it. I’m not even close to ready for baby girl’s arrival, so I’m hoping that the “nesting” feeling will kick in soon so I can get the nursery (and everything else) in gear.

$10 at Target: Summer Beauty

It's been a couple of months since I've joined in the $10 at Target linkup, but this month I couldn't resist. I managed to wander past the dollar section, which usually sucks me in. Instead, I found myself in the beauty aisles, in search of some fun summer beauty products.

Mom and Toddler Style: Summer Cool and a Little Love

With all that’s been going on in the world lately, I often feel ridiculous pouring my heart and soul into blogging and all that goes with it. It can feel trivial and pointless, and yet I know that in the wake of tragedy that’s how so many parts of life feel. However, I was thinking about blogging and what it means to me, and how so many of you, whom I’ve never even met, I consider my friends.

I know that there’s negativity out there, but what I see more than anything else in this community is support, encouragement and understanding. And while our blogs themselves may not be a certain means of changing this world for the better, I can’t help but think that the people behind them, and the love we show each other, are doing just that. In a little tiny way, sharing our lives and the things that bring us joy, no matter how insignificant they seem, is helping love conquer hate.

Earlier this year, Still Being Molly shared a list of 366 random acts of kindness, and somehow I feel like doing these things, even the small ones, will help me feel a little less helpless in the face of all the sadness and hate we see on the news. Will you join me in spreading some love and kindness?

In My Library Tote: July Books for Mom and Toddler

Even though summer feels busier than any other time of the year (except maybe Christmas), I always have the desire to read all the things during the summer. Maybe it's because I love the idea of relaxing on the beach with a book, and even though I can't make the beach part of my daydream happen, I can at least follow through on the book part. Here's what I've been reading lately.

Stitch Fix Review: My July Fix

Since I have a lot of my basics covered for maternity wear, I decided to order a Stitch Fix box this month to get a "fun" item or two for my wardrobe. I was really happy with what my stylist sent, however, despite adjusting the preferences in my profile the prices are a lot higher than I'd like. I'm realizing that if I want to continue getting boxes, I'll need to either plan my budget accordingly or be okay with just keeping one item per box. Spoiler: I only kept one item this month.

Here's what I got in my July fix.

How I Style Bright Coral Pants

My husband jumped out of a plane on Friday. He had a parachute on, but I still can't believe he did that. It was for a bachelor party, and he made it to the ground safe and sound, thank goodness. Meanwhile, the riskiest thing I did all weekend was wear these bright coral pants. Oh, and eat chocolate ice cream while wearing this white tee. Pregnant or not, I'll take my risks over his any day. I'm not really a skydiving type of gal. Would you ever skydive (or have you done it)?

Spring or summer outfit idea - coral pants with a striped blazer, white tee, and floral sneakers.

Striped blazer: Gap Factory (similar) | white tee: Old Navy Maternity (v-neck version) | coral pants: Old Navy Maternity (similar, non-maternity)  | earrings: c/o Uncommon Goods | necklace: Swell Caroline | floral sneakers: thrifted Gap (similar)

Spied it, Tried it: No Churn Ice Cream

You all know how I feel about ice cream. It's more than just love, it's an obsession. One of my goals last month was to make some homemade ice cream, because I don't do that as often as you think I would as president of the "Ice Cream Lovers Anonymous" Club.

On my "For the Sweet Tooth" board, I had pinned several "no churn" ice cream varieties that looked both delicious and easy to make, so I decided to choose one of those to try.

Want to make ice cream without pulling out a big, bulky ice cream maker? Try one of these no-churn ice cream varieties for an easy, delicious treat! Click through to see the recipe I tried.

Currently: July

Summer is going by ridiculously fast, don't you think? June was a whirlwind, and I'm sad to see it go. Between heading to Nashville with friends, visiting cousins in Hutchinson, and lots of time spent with grandparents and friends, the past month has been a blast.

As always, I'm linking with Anne and Jenna for their monthly linkup to share what I'm currently...

Red, White, and Blue Style for Mom and Toddler

For those of you in the US, I hope you're enjoying your long holiday weekend. Are you doing anything to celebrate today? We may go watch some fireworks, but the shows are all so much past Jona's bedtime that it just depends on how he does.

Even if we're not doing too much to celebrate, we're at least wearing our red, white, and blue today. I love these colors in the summer anyway, but I couldn't help but get a little theme-y for the 4th of July. We got a bit of a break from all the hot weather over the weekend, so I pulled my jean jacket out from hiding. It was still warm enough for Jona to wear his shorts, so I put this festive red pair on him.

How did you spend your 4th of July weekend?

On me: denim jacket: Gap (similar) | striped dress: Old Navy Maternity (similar, non-maternity) | necklace: Dean Harris for Target (similar) | shoes: Toms
On Jona: polo shirt: Arizona (similar) | red shorts: Gap | sandals: Old Navy (similar in brown)
