Blushing Pink

I have to admit that I often forget the significance of Memorial Day, and focus instead on the bonus day off. While I do love having this extra day to relax, I don't want to forget the reason for this holiday--all the brave men and women who died serving our country. Thank you to all of you who serve or who have served in the past!

I'm going to keep today's post short, but wanted to share a little update on the baby front. If you can't tell from all the pink I'm wearing, we are excited to announce that Jona will be getting a sister! We are thrilled, and I can't wait to go buy some sweet little girl clothes! I have absolutely loved being the mom to a sweet boy, so I can't wait to see what having a little girl brings.

I hope you're enjoying your holiday if you're in the US, and have a wonderful week!

Spied it, Tried it: Caprese Pasta

I'm not a big salad eater. Sure, I like salad, but as much as I wish I did, I never crave salad. Chocolate, yes. Salad, no. The only salad that ever comes close to making my mouth truly water is Caprese salad, with its juicy tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil. Now that's a salad I could eat again and again.

I love adding pasta into the Caprese mix, so I scoured my Pinterest boards this month for the perfect Caprese-style pasta.

May Clothing Budget

I mentioned last month that May is typically when I go crazy with the clothes shopping. For one, my birthday is at the end of April, so I have some money I’m itching to spend. Also, spring is my favorite season and I can’t resist the bright, colorful styles I see this time of year. Yet, while I did do some shopping, I didn’t go to crazy this month. Here’s what I bought.

{my clothing budget: May 2016}

Off Broadway Shoes - Michael "Patsy" black slide sandals: $11 (had a $10 birthday coupon)
Loft - Heathered Slip On Sneakers in Driftwood Grey: $12 (gray is sold out, but here's the white version)
Loft - Striped Ankle Tie Espadrilles in Fresh Navy: $32
Loft - Maternity Roll Panel Skinny Jeans in White: $42 (demi panel version)

Total Spent: $97

Mom and Toddler Nautical Stripes for Memorial Day

Somehow, Memorial Day weekend is this coming weekend. How is that even possible? Do you have any plans? We don’t yet, and I am just fine with that. Life has been plenty busy lately, so having an extra day to catch up (on my to-do list, on sleep, on ice cream consumption…) sounds wonderful to me.

Since Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, I thought nautical stripes would be just the thing for Jona and I to wear. My addiction to stripes is definitely carrying over into Jona’s closet, because he had quite a selection of striped shirts to choose from. I love the oversized stripes on this red tee from Old Navy, and couldn’t resist these Birkenstock-style sandals when I was there as well.

What are you doing for Memorial Weekend?

In My Library Tote: May's Mom and Toddler Book Picks

This is a busy season of life, but lately I've felt the need to slow down where I can. One way I do that is by reading. I've always made reading time a priority, but over the past month or so, I've really turned to reading for comfort and relaxation as much as possible. I have a future post planned about how I fit reading into my busy life, but for now I thought I'd share this month's edition of what we've been reading lately.

{recent reads: mama needs a break edition}

What to Wear When Nothing Fits

At 17 weeks pregnant, every morning I'm doing a little closet gambling. Will these pants that fit last week still fit today? Will this shirt resemble a crop top? I'm outgrowing my regular wardrobe a lot more quickly this time around it seems, but there have been a few "morning saver" pieces that never let me down.

I'm putting together a couple of looks that consist of these go-to pieces that help me stretch (literally) my non-maternity wardrobe. Even if you don't have a growing belly, I think we all have days that our skinny jeans feel a little too tight, so these types of pieces are great for those blah-feeling days too.

What are your go-to pieces when you feel like nothing fits?

Casual Spring Basics: Thursday Moda Co-Host

I love how one little change can really freshen up a look. Thanks to birthday money, I recently went on a little shoe shopping extravaganza. My closet doesn’t have many other new additions, yet putting on an outfit made of mostly old basics plus new shoes makes me feel just a little more fabulous.

This is a look I’m sure I’ve worn (and maybe even blogged) many times before: classic chambray, cargo vest, and white jeans. However, these fun new slip-on sneakers make it feel fresh, and perfect for a busy spring weekend.

How are you freshening up your spring basics?

Thanks so much to Ada for having me as a co-host this week for Thursday Moda! Aren't her pink sneakers so cute? I always love seeing her fun, colorful looks and her mommy and me posts with her adorable daughter Vivian. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Come back on Monday for some more spring style inspiration.

Pregnancy Update: 16 Weeks + First Trimester Survival Kit

One thing I wish I would have done more of when I was pregnant with Jona is document my pregnancy on the blog, so I’m going to try to do a better job this time around. Today I’m sharing my first pregnancy update, plus a little survival kit of all the things I couldn’t live without during my first trimester.

Wardrobe Staple: Bright Cardigan

When you think of wardrobe staples, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For me, one of the top things on that list is a cardigan. And, if I’m being honest, it would be cardigans; one just isn’t enough. Inspired by Anne and Jenn’s #momstyleremix prompt this week, I’m styling this current favorite coral cardigan for a work look.

Pairing a bright cardigan with a neutral skirt, like this comfy drawstring-waist one, is a go-to outfit combination for me. Since both the cardigan and the skirt are on the long side, I tuck in my top to keep the combination from looking sloppy. Also, it may not be the most leg-lengthening choice, but I couldn’t help but add my new striped espadrilles for a summery feel.

Ultimate Subscription Box: Mother's Day Edition

Subscription boxes are quite a thing these days, and although I don’t have experience with very many, I do love the idea. When Elle wrote a post recently about her ultimate subscription box, and encouraged readers to do the same, I was excited to come up with one of my own. However, instead of creating a subscription box tailored to suit me, in honor of Mother’s Day (this Sunday, eep!) I created one that my mom would love.

Currently: May

I love starting a new month, but saying goodbye to April, my favorite of the dozen, is always a little bittersweet. However, I'm looking forward to the warm weather and longer days of May. As usual, I'm joining Anne and Jenna to share what I'm currently up to.

{celebrating} my birthday and a growing family. I've had a lot to celebrate lately, with my birthday last week and a baby coming in October. For my birthday, Aaron and I went to a Royals game with my best friend and her husband, and we followed up the Royals' victory with delicious food at BRGR, a local burger joint. This past weekend, we celebrated again with family at Ponak's, one of our favorite spots for Mexican food. Also included in the many days of celebrating: several ice cream outings and homemade red cake. Life is pretty good.

{reading} The Widow by Fiona Barton. Quite a change of pace from the last few books I read, this story is about a woman whose husband dies after being hit by a bus. She's not the traditional grieving widow, because before he died, her husband had been accused of kidnapping a little girl. She stood by him when he was alive, but upon his death she's no longer sure where she stands. I've been tearing through this one, trying to figure out what really happened.

{pondering} baby names. It's a little early, as we have several months to decide, but I can't help but think about potential names for the newest member of the fam. We're pretty set on a boy's name but can't settle on a middle name. Yet we're both completely stumped on a girl's name. We should find out what we're having at the end of this month, so I'm hoping knowing either way will help us make a decision. Hit me with your name ideas though, I'd love to hear some!

{sipping} fun sodas and sparkling juice. Before I was pregnant I looked forward to a nice glass of wine after I put Jona to bed each night. I love water, but I drink it all day long and like a little variety in my evening beverages. So I've been occasionally treating myself with unique sodas and sparkling juice (I love Izze Soda!), and sometimes even plain old Coke. It's no Sauvignon Blanc, but it's a nice change from (more) water.

{going} shopping! I had the day off last Friday and treated myself to a little shopping trip (courtesy of birthday money from the parents!). I found some shoes at Target and Off Broadway, and some clothes for Jona at Old Navy. I even had a little fun online with a sale at Loft (and found these cute espadrilles!). I'll be sure to share my purchases later this month.

So, what are you up to right now?

Today I'm also joining in a birthday celebration for Ada at Elegance and Mommyhood, so be sure to check it out!

Goals for May and April Goal Review

Each month I share my goals as a way to motivate myself to get things done and stay accountable. Here's this month's recap and the next month's set of goals for my home, my blog, and my family and personal life.

How to Modernize Khaki Pants

At the beginning of spring, I’m always thrilled to pull out all my skirts and dresses and wear them as soon as possible. The reality is though, that many days it’s still too cold for bare legs. It’s about this time of year when I realize my pants situation is in a sad, sad state, and I think about buying some new ones and rarely do. (Does anyone else have as much trouble buying pants? Jeans are a challenge too, but pants? The worst.)

I recently pulled out these cropped khakis from Gap that have been in my closet for years. Every year I think about putting them in the donate/sell pile, but somehow they always wind up back in my closet. I think it’s my desperate need for variety in my work wear that saves them year after year.

I’ll call them cropped pants, but honestly they’re pretty close to “khaki capri pants,” a style that to me says I’m ready to throw away any hope I have of feeling youthful or cool. I may well throw out that hope regardless (my bedtime is about 9:30 and I just learned what “on fleek” means), but I'm not ready to give up just yet. So, just like a minivan with a bumper sticker saying “I used to be cool” (love those) I’m going to do my best to say the same thing here, but my bumper sticker is a pair of shoes.

To modernize these khaki “crops” (if you will) I’m adding my coolest pair of shoes, my red lace-up flats. A few other modern elements include this swingy striped top, perfect for hiding what looks like a food baby at this point, and my favorite gold leather earrings.

Do you have any clothes that for whatever reason you keep rescuing from the donate pile?
