How to Style a Chambray Dress for Winter: 2 Outfit Ideas

I believe wholeheartedly that most style rules are made to be broken, such as “no white after Labor Day.” However, in my own closet I tend to draw bold lines dividing clothes seasonally, and I rarely wear something for spring (like a floral cardigan) in the fall or winter.

These rigid closet “divisions” were originally born out of necessity: I simply didn’t have room in my closet to store out of season clothes, so they got relegated to the basement. Now that I have more closet space to work with at our new house, I find myself loosening up a little and thinking about how items I previously considered “off limits” for this season could work.

One such piece is my chambray dress, which to me has always felt very spring-like. However, inspired by this pin from Peaches in a Pod, I decided to try to winterize it. Since I haven’t worn it in a while, it gave my winter wardrobe a much needed (and free!) refresh.

Inspired by the look I mentioned above, I decided to try layering the shirt-dress over a long sleeve striped shirt. Not only does this add warmth, but I love the look of the stripes peeking through the sleeves. For last week’s mild weather, this would be enough, but since it’s Kansas and winter is far from over, I’ll also add a blanket scarf and tights.

To me, adding a cardigan is the simplest and most obvious way to make this dress work for cold weather. Riding boots and a dark brown belt also balance out the light color and lightweight fabric of the dress, and make it feel more winter-appropriate. Luckily, I was able to ditch the tights when I wore this over the weekend; the boots and sweater still kept me cozy warm.
