On "Going Out" Clothes

On Saturday Aaron and I went out with my best friend Abby and her husband to celebrate Abby's birthday. While we see each other often (our kids even go to the same daycare), we don't get too many opportunities to go out all together without the kids. So we called the babysitters grandparents and took advantage of the double-date-night opportunity.

I remember that there was a time in my life (we'll call it college) when I had a whole portion of my wardrobe devoted to "going out" clothes. That portion mostly involved colorful or embellished tops and heels. I'm not sure if it's age or motherhood, or a combination of the two, but my "going out" wardrobe no longer exists. Actually, with the staying power of skinny jeans, I guess a little hint of the past does remain... Anyway, my point is that now when I have an occasion to get a little gussied up to go out (but not full-on wedding-type gussy) that's when I feel like I have nothing to wear.

I settled on this new leopard print blouse I got at Loft, with my gray moto jacket and the aforementioned skinny jeans. While I do like this look, and I feel that it does reflect my style aesthetic, I can't help but think that I could wear this very same outfit to work for casual Friday. Have I really reached that point in my life in which all my clothes are mom-clothes or work-clothes? Folks, I'm officially old. (Using "folks" in a sentence doesn't really help my case either, does it?) All I can say is that I feel a pair of fabulous heels coming on in my spring capsule... I think going out shoes (one pair!) sounds reasonable. These heels are pretty great, but they're definitely in the "sensible" camp.

Do you have any "going out" clothes or are you also living in old-lady land?

I think I up my coolness factor, even just a little, when I wear this fabulous moto jacket. Here are some other ways I've worn it.

  1. that moto jacket is some kinda magic, huh? it pairs well with just about everything - a perfect mix of comfy and lux. also... i'm already noticing my going out wardrobe diminishing. i think it has something to do with living in mpls? chicago called for fancy attire just about everywhere you went, but the look here is decidedly more relaxed.

  3. Thanks Jennifer! Yes I love this jacket :) And that makes sense too, where you live totally affects what you wear. Around here (the places I go at least) things are pretty relaxed too.

  4. Hey nothing wrong with jeans and tees! I couldn't live without my denim :) Thanks Elle!

  5. I totally tried to do the IM look for going out on Saturday too and was kind of in the same boat - I don't really have much for "going out" clothes anymore either. Mom style for the win? For what it's worth I really like your new blouse!

  6. Yes, I think so--mom style totally for the win :) And thanks Beth!

  7. Coming over from Inspiration Monday ... I see the inspiration! Nubbly jacket, skinny pant! You just classed it up!

  8. Thanks for coming by Cara! And thanks--I really did use that look as my jumping off point with the jacket and pants :) I actually planned to wear boots but we got some surprise nice weather so I happily bared my ankles! :)

  9. Very cute top and of course....those shoes. I hear you though. I'll sometimes see something cute like a sequined pencil skirt and think I should get that, but then think, when will I wear it? Then when I do finally go out, nothing to wear. Your outfit is perfect.

  10. Thanks Megan! Yes, I have that same trouble. I have the occasion to wear stuff like that maybe, oh a few times a year, so I never can convince myself I need it.

  12. You look great, but I totally feel you on this - all of my "going out" outfits end up feeling like something I could wear during the day too. The capsule wardrobe was supposed to help me with this nothing-to-wear issue when it comes to date night, but we're only partway there... partly because it's hard for me to justify clothes specifically for going out when we don't do it THAT often and when I'm so into item versatility, but partly because I just plain don't know what would be a good going out outfit for me! I've already told myself that I'm allowed to buy something if I figure out what the right date night thing is, but I still haven't figured it out. Faux leather jacket maybe? We need to brainstorm here :)

  13. Yes, exactly--I can't justify spending money on clothes I rarely wear, but then again I hate that "nothing to wear" feeling! I definitely don't have it figured out either. Faux leather jacket sounds good..that's something I've had on my wishlist for a while actually. I'm still thinking maybe fabulous heels too. If you find the right thing you'll have to let me know!

  14. I have going out clothes, but not as many occasions to wear them! I think you did well, for not having going out clothes, you look really great!

  15. Thanks! For a makeshift "going out" outfit I like how it turned out :)

  16. I love this! I think the shoes make it more 'going out' too. :) Maybe jewelry or something else sparkly would bump it up a tad more. I totally get it. I don't really have anything too 'going out'-y either. I try to keep a few metallic or sparkly bags around, and throw on some darker eye shadow. Maybe jewelry. I usually stick to black. I don't really have a 'going out' section though. Though the chance to do that is pretty infrequent these days. :) XO -Alexandra

  17. Ooh yes on the metallic/sparkly bags, great idea! You know I may have one of those, I need to pull it out when I do go out! And I agree about jewelry and makeup dressing up a look too. Makeup is one I usually forget--I don't remember to change it up at night! Good ideas.
    Thanks Alexandra!

  19. Oh, I'm firmly in "old lady land" even though I just turned 27 and don't have any kids...hahaha! Truthfully, I've never had a "going out" wardrobe because I've not been one to "go out." Usually, I just throw on a cute top and jeans or a dress and call it good haha :)

  20. That's really all you need though! My "going out" phase was pretty brief...just a couple of years in college, but even then a lot of times it was to go to football games or bars to watch football games (I met my husband in college...hence all the football...)
