On Cardigans and Remixing

I had a conversation in the comments the other day with Anne about the expectations we have for our clothes. I mentioned that sometimes I felt like I expect too much from my clothes--I have a hard time buying a dress that can "just" be worn as a dress or really any item that has limited remixing capabilities. While these expectations can sometimes be a bad thing (case in point: I almost passed up this dress that I really like because it's not very versatile), other times it really helps me get more creative with my clothes.

Wearing my cardigan as a shirt (well, with a modesty layer underneath...that V is just a leeetle too deep for me) is one such example of this concept. I'm so glad the Two Birds gals picked this picture for Inspiration Monday, because I actually saw it earlier on Glamour and planned to try out this idea. It's nothing too novel; just buttoning up the cardigan rather than wearing it open. However, I never wear my cardigans that way, so I'm glad I tried it. Simple, but I like it.

Have you tried any "wardrobe experiments" lately?

I've had this yellow cardigan for a while now, and even just as a regular ol' cardigan it's proven very remixable. Here are two other ways I've styled it.

  1. Ooh yes! I love how it can totally change the look of a cardigan by simply buttoning it up! I should try it sometime since I pretty much have that same cardigan! Target for the win :)

  2. I agree, nice for a little change up - seems like such a minor thing, but it actually gives your outfit an entirely different silhouette than when you wear it open with jeans. And expectations really can do you in sometimes... sometimes shopping decisions, especially when it's for something like an investment coat or boots that I'm hunting for, can get me really worked up, and I have to remind myself that they're just clothes - and while I want them to be versatile, they're not going to solve all of my life's problems, so just pick one that's good/great, but don't expect perfection!

  3. Yes, Target is the best! It seems so simple, but I never think to button it up like that.

  4. Hahaha, yes, exactly! I tend to overthink pretty much everything, clothes included. But at the end of the day, yes, they're just clothes.
    Thanks Anne :)

  5. I am the same way with clothes, I want to get the most bang for my buck. But sometimes it's great to buy that one super unique piece! I love the cardigan as a shirt...I also rarely wear mine buttoned up!

  6. Thanks, yes, I totally agree! I guess it's just a good idea to have a balance of the much-worn and the unique.

  7. Looks great and you've found a color that goes well with so much. It probably is just a leetle low cut to wear without the tank top for anybody except Siena. It looks cute with the tank top.

  8. Thanks Megan! I agree--a celebrity can get away with that low of a V. I'd be pulling at it all day :)

  13. Minimal remixablitly never stopped me from buying a dress. It is was it is. You can pair it with a jacket or perhaps layer it in some way, but what is really so wrong about wearing a beautiful dress just as it is? Having been blogging for so many years now I'm more open to the idea of repeating. It's a different day, a different time in your life, and chances are, I'm the only one who will remember it's a repeat (if that!).

  16. You're so right, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a beautiful dress, just on its own. Very true about repeats too, typically I'm the only one who remembers!

  18. Oooh, yes! I like how you wore your cardigan buttoned up. It's a look I rarely try out for myself, but I always like it when I actually do it! I love the simplicity and "laid-back-ness" of this outfit!! :)
