Currently: October

I love October. It’s when fall starts to really feel like fall. The chill in the air has me happily reaching for a cardigan and a salted caramel mocha, but it’s not cold enough yet to make me cover myself with 17 blankets, plug in a space heater, and tell Aaron I’m never leaving the house again. (Winter and I, we’re not close.)

I’m linking up with Anne and Jenna for their monthly Currently linkup. Here’s what I’m up to now.

Smelling – Okay, so I do have a complaint about fall, and that’s allergies. Mine have been making smelling a bit of a challenge, so let’s go with “listening to” instead.

Listening to – hymns. I like to sing to Jona at night before he goes to sleep, but some nights I’d rather just listen to music. I have a few lullaby CDs, but I wanted to add some variety to the lullaby repertoire. As a child, one of my favorite things to listen to at night was a tape of hymns by B.J. Thomas. I found this Amazing Grace album on iTunes and it had all the songs I remembered. Poor Jona, he has to listen to his mother crooning along with B.J. as he’s trying to fall asleep.

Loving – red wine. When the weather starts to cool down, I make the all-important switch from white wine to red. Some people pair their wine with food. I pair mine with the weather.

pumpkin past / last year’s [lazy mom] Halloween costume for Jona

Planning – fall adventures. This weekend it’s the American Royal Barbecue here in Kansas City, and I’m hoping Aaron will get his school work done (he’s working on his Master’s in Counseling) so we can go! Other plans in the works: a trip to the pumpkin patch, a wine and cheese party, and maybe a mini trick-or-treat session for Jona on Halloween.

Baking – chocolate chip cookies. My favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe is Jacques Torres’s Secret Chocolate Chip Cookies, and it’s been a while since I made them. I cheated on the ingredients (just regular AP flour, and no fancy chocolate) but they still tasted delicious. At least that last couple of cookie sheets did. I wouldn’t say I burnt the first batch, but let’s just say they were more “brown” than “golden”.

Jona’s first Royals game

Celebrating – the Kansas City Royals!! We beat the Oakland A’s last night in a 12-inning Wild Card game to advance to the playoffs. What an exciting game! The last time we were in the post season was 1985, and we won the whole thing. Lets do it again Royals!
